Quake shakes up the Net :(
KUALA LUMPUR: No Gmail, no Yahoo!, no blogs.
Malaysian Internet users woke up yesterday morning to a crawl on the so-called information superhighway that would have rivalled KL’s infamous traffic jams.
Local access to Internet services and websites hosted overseas came to a practical standstill after international links were disrupted by the earthquake that struck southern Taiwan on Tuesday night.
The earthquake damaged submarine cables that form part of the region-wide Asia Pacific Cable Network 2 (APCN 2), disrupting voice and Internet communications over much of Asia.
APCN 2 is a 19,000km-long fibre-optic cable network linking Japan, South Korea, China, Malaysia, Singapore, the United States, Europe and Australia.
The network has been up since October 2002 and is jointly operated by 26 Asian telecommunications carriers, including TM Bhd.
The damaged links are between Shantou (China) and Tanshui (Taiwan), and, Lantau (Hong Kong) and Chongming (China).
Internet service provider (ISP) Jaring said the disruption started at 3.45am yesterday, and warned users to expect congestion to and from overseas websites during peak hours. …Click here to read more

Vodafone ‘plans bid for Indian mobile operator’

Mobile phone giant Vodafone is considering buying a controlling stake in India’s Hutchison Essar.
The move could spark a bid battle with Reliance Communications, India’s second largest mobile operator.
The Newbury-based company said the Indian mobile phone market, which is the fastest-growing in the world, offers “great potential”.
The company added: “The board of Vodafone continues to believe the mobile market in India has great potential and is therefore considering the acquisition of a controlling interest in Hutchison Essar.
“Such a transaction would be consistent with our stated strategy of seeking selective acquisition opportunities in developing markets.”
Foreign investors are limited to owning 74 per cent of Indian mobile operators, so Vodafone would need a local partner if it wants to complete the move.

Produced by Kanakarathina Movies, Pokiri stars Asin opposite Vijay and Prakash Raj plays the baddie in the movie. An action-packed adventure, the movie has all the commercial elements in the right mix.
The movie features Vijay in the role of a ruthless baddie, who is part of a mafia. But he is a man on a mission. He has objectives to achieve. What they are and how he accomplishes them forms the story line.

BMW 5-series facelift spyshot

The new facelifted E60 BMW 5-series has been spotted making it’s rounds slightly disguised. Among changes on the front end include a newly designed bumper, with fog lamps now positioned closer to the center of the bumper instead of closer to the edges, as well as redesigned headlamps. You can have a look at the comparison above, where the new slightly disguised facelifted E60 BMW 5-series front end fascia is at the top, while the current E60 5-series design is on the bottom.
