Mercedes today announced it would add a new diesel variant to is S-Class range for the coming model year. The new eight-cylinder model is powered by a state-of-the-art V8 CDI engine developing 320 hp and 538 pound-feet of peak torque.
The S 420 CDI powers from 0 - 62 mph in 6.6 seconds and goes on to reach 155 mph (electronically governed). During normal city and highway driving, it can deliver fuel consumption figures of nearly 25 mpg.
The new S 420 CDI is available in Europe to order now, with deliveries to customers due to start in December 2006. Unfortunately, emissions regulations will likely prevent this non-Bluetec diesel from coming stateside.
