Ok, now this sounds really weird. A hot buzz going around that a company called Psystar are going to offer a PC based Leopard machine? Its called “Openmac” and its going to priced at $399. Specifications are as below,
- 2.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
- 2GB of DDR2 667 memory
- Integrated Intel GMA 950 Graphics
- 20x DVD+/-R Drive
- 4 USB Ports
- 250GB 7200RPM Drive
This is just the basic for the price mentioned above. Just like regular PC’s, you can upgrade further.
Now this has caught my attentions. In the early days, I used to think of just purchasing the OSX and assembling my own system. Then I did some research and so on. I found that certain requirements was needed and so on. I surfed tons of forums that offered tweaks and so. This was the OSX Tiger period.
But as Leopard released, my mind changed as I did not mind paying for what you get. Apple has done a great job recently by assembling great hardware compiled with great softwares as well. The unique design and style refrained me from building my own and simply purchased a Macbook Pro.
I later on read the T&C of Leopard. I found out that it was against the T&C to use leopard on a non-mac system. I was blown away by confirming it. If I was not mistaken, it used to be legal to run previous OSX on own built systems.
Now Im just questioning my self on how are this guys at Psystar are going to achieve on what they have said. Im sure they might run into some legal issues here. But at the same time I wonder how the guys who are producing the “Modbook”, the tablet version of the MacBook Pro got away with legal issues. Perhaps its still the same hardware ?
Sources say that this move by Psystar is based on the Osx86project. What ever said, we will have to wait for Psystar to officially release the product in order to know what’s next. Below are some links regarding this issue for posterity.
